How I become a Computer Technician

Becoming a computer technician was not something I had planned from the beginning, but it turned out to be one of the most rewarding journeys I’ve ever taken. The path wasn’t always straightforward, but my passion for technology and problem-solving drove me toward this career. Here’s how I became a computer technician and what I learned along the way.

The Early Days: Where It All Began

Like many people in tech, my fascination with computers began with curiosity. Living in a rural part of the town makes you less exposed to new technology. It was 2008 when I chose to take a degree in information technology even without any idea about computers. I remember the first time I sat down at a computer—how the complexity of the machine intrigued me.

My first real exposure to computers came when I was in college. I would spend hours in a rented computer  searching with different programs, learning how to install software, and even fixing minor issues for family and friends. It was through these experiences that I realized I had a knack for troubleshooting. I was not afraid to make mistakes, and that trial-and-error approach helped me build confidence.

After college

After  finishing college, I thought that my skills were not enough to enter the world of a computer technician, so I entered a field that was not related to what I was passionate about. I entered a corporate job as a loan officer in a local company and stayed there  for almost 6 years, that I almost forgot the things that I wanted when I was younger;  but before the pandemic struck, I resigned from my corporate job  and decided to pursue my tech career.

Building a career

While in a lockdown, I decided to re-learn what I studied  in college and add new learning while waiting for everything to go back to normal. I joined diffrent facebook groups, watch as lot of youtube videos and registered in any free or paid training in relevant to computer repair and bought deffective laptop to put my training in practice. It was almost end of 2020 when i started promoting repair services online and everything added to my experience. In 2021 having the things that I learned I decicded to apply for a computer technician job here in our small town which i am still working until this very moment.

Key Lessons from My Journey

Stay Curious and Keep Learning: Technology evolves rapidly, and staying up-to-date is crucial in this field. Whether it’s new hardware or emerging cybersecurity threats, continuous learning is essential.

Hands-On Experience is Vital: You can read all the textbooks in the world, but nothing beats hands-on experience. Find opportunities to practice what you’ve learned, whether through internships, personal projects, or freelance work.

Get Certified: While experience is important, certifications help validate your knowledge and give you an edge in the job market. Consider certifications like CompTIA A+ or others relevant to your career path.

Problem-Solving is the Core of the Job: As a computer technician, you’re essentially a problem solver. Develop a logical approach to troubleshooting, and don’t be afraid to ask for help or do additional research when you’re stuck.

Customer Service is Key: At the end of the day, you’re providing a service to people. Being able to communicate effectively with clients, explain technical issues in simple terms, and deliver great customer service will set you apart.
